The Venetian Macao

The Venetian Macao is the largest casino hotel in the world. Not one of the largest. The largest. 550,000 square feet of gaming floor. 3,000 suites. Canals. Gondoliers. A replica of Venice so exact in its proportions that it occasionally fools people who have been to Venice. Sheldon Adelson built it with the explicit intention of doing in Macao what he had done to the Las Vegas Strip with the Venetian Nevada — and then doing it larger, because China's high-roller culture makes American gambling look like an introductory lesson.

The Address

The Cotai Strip — the land reclaimed from the sea between the islands of Taipa and Coloane — is Macao's answer to the Las Vegas Strip, and in several important respects it is the superior product. The climate is subtropical, which means that even December is mild enough for outdoor pools. The gambling legislation is different from mainland China's — Macao is the only place in China where casino gambling is legal. This creates a unique concentration: the wealth of China, with nowhere to go but here. The Venetian Macao's location on the Cotai Strip puts it at the centre of this geography.

The Suite

The 3,000 suites range from Bella (600 square feet) to Royal (700 square feet) to the unpublished upper categories that require a phone call to access. The Chairman Suite — which the hotel does not list on its website — occupies a floor on the hotel's highest levels and is allocated exclusively to players of sufficient significance to the casino. It includes a private butler team, an in-suite dining kitchen, and a connection to the premium gaming areas that bypasses the public casino floor entirely. The suite does not have a rate; the rate is a function of what the occupant is willing to play.

The Casino

The Venetian Macao casino floor operates on a scale that renders the term "casino floor" somewhat inadequate. It is, instead, a casino district — multiple themed areas, each with its own minimum-table structure, its own atmospheric calibration. The mass-market areas support visitors arriving from the Macao ferry terminals. The premium areas require an introduction — typically arranged by the hotel's VIP gaming host, who will have reviewed your gaming history before you arrive. The private gaming rooms are not listed in any public document. Ask the VIP host when you check in. The answer to your question depends on who you are.

Getting There & Getting In

Macao International Airport serves regional routes; Hong Kong International is the arrival point for intercontinental travel, with ferry service from the airport directly to the Venetian Macao's ferry terminal. The hotel operates a private helicopter transfer from Hong Kong Airport (20 minutes). The ferry, for those who prefer it, is comfortable and considerably faster than the road alternative. Arrange all logistics through the hotel's VIP team — the infrastructure surrounding high-level Venetian Macao guests is substantial and worth engaging early.

  • Contact the VIP gaming host directly before booking — room allocation is linked to gaming history.
  • Arrive by helicopter from Hong Kong Airport for the correct first impression.
  • The Chairman Suite is not online — you will need to call and ask by name.
